President Muhammadu Buhari who left the country earlier arrived New York for the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA72).

The President was accompanied by Govs. Abdul’aziz Yari, David Umahi and Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) of Zamfara, Ebonyi and Ondo states respectively.

Buhari is scheduled to hold a lunch meeting with President Donald Trump of the United States of America, along with other world leaders.

He was received at the JF Kennedy Airport by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, and the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Bande.

The president was thereafter, welcomed at about 8:30 p.m. at his lodge by the Ministers of Solid Minerals Kayode Fayemi, Education, Adamu Adamu, and Industry, Trade and Investment counterpart, Okechukwu Enelamah.

Reminder (a statement by Femi Adesina):

“The high point of the President’s visit will be his participation in the General Debate during which he will deliver the country’s National Statement. The theme for this year’s Debate is: “Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet.”

“During the General Assembly, Nigeria will participate in high-level meetings on ‘Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse: Building Momentum for Change,’ the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, a High Level Event organized by the African Union under its Theme of the Year: ‘Roadmap on the Demographic Dividend: from Commitment to Action,’ among others.”

Before leaving for the US, president Buhari told the military that they must defeat the ideologies that promote mindless killings and anarchy, saying that, Nigeria is confronted by enemies whose identities and motivations are unknown.

His statement was delivered by Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo while commissioning 689 new officers into the armed forces on Saturday.
